New kid on the block, uMkhonto Wesizwe (MK), seemingly has a painful shortcoming and does not make the voters’ roll. Though a new party, its impact and growth on the political scene certainly do not go unnoticed. With the likes of famous artist ZuluBoy and Thamsanqa Kenke, former national spokesperson of SANCO joining the movement, the party is certainly making strides. The party that initially took the KwaZulu-Natal province by storm and now the country at large, is facing the possibility of being excluded from the voters’ roll despite the positive impact it has made thus far.
Headed by former president of South Africa and ANC member, Jacob Gedleyihlekisa Zuma, the party has been accused by the ruling party in the ANC of unlawful registration with the IEC. With its claim, the country’s ruling party seeks to have it de-registered and has accordingly taken it to court. A matter that has been brewing since earlier this year, after the MK party was registered in September 2023.
The MK party’s registration was registered with an invalid address of its headquarters, with an X user under the handle @JvanLogg alleging that the initial registration had signatures that seemed fraudulent and were later rectified. With the Secretary General of the ANC, Fikile Mbalula, saying deregistering the MK on those grounds is only the first step, the second matter to be taken to court will be for the “MK” name and logo, claiming they belong to the ANC.
He further claimed that Jacob Zuma has deployed members of the ANC for the gain of the MK in an interview with SABC News reporters. The Zuma-led party has not welcomed the claims; youth leader Bonginkosi Khanyisile has asserted that should the party be removed from the ballot, there shall be no elections.
With recent polls suggesting that MK will have more votes than the EFF as reported by Qaanitah Hunter via News24, could the striking off of the MK from the ballots be just another political move by the ruling party?
