(The Post News)- In a significant step toward ensuring a peaceful electoral process, 48 South African political parties and independent candidates have come together to sign the Electoral Code of Conduct. This historic event, hosted by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), signifies a commitment by candidates to uphold the principles of fair play, respect, and non-violence during the upcoming 2024 national and provincial elections.
The signing ceremony is taking place at the Gallagher Convention Center in Midrand, where representatives from major political parties, including the African National Congress (ANC), the Democratic Alliance (DA), the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), and ActionSA, among others, gathered to pledge their commitment to a peaceful electoral process. The event emphasizes the importance of adhering to the rule of law and maintaining the integrity of the democratic system.
According to the commission, the electoral code of conduct serves as a binding agreement among political contenders, emphasizing their dedication to a peaceful, respectful, and fair electoral process. By signing this code, parties pledge to uphold democratic principles, maintain civil discourse, and refrain from violence or inflammatory rhetoric during the election season.
IEC CEO Sy Mamabolo expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “From today on, there will be a ballot paper draw, which will lay the basis on which we can commence with the ballot printing process. This is quite an exciting moment for us because it provides the foundation to move forward.”
In a touching address, Electoral Commission Chairperson Glen Mashing emphasized the significance of South Africa’s democratic journey as the nation commemorates 25 years of freedom. Speaking at the Electoral Code of Conduct signing ceremony, Mashinini called upon all political parties and candidates to recommit themselves to the Constitution and its core values.
“Remember,” Mashinini urged, “that in just 49 days, the elections will conclude, but our democratic voyage of constructing a just, fair, equitable, and united South Africa will persist. Let us not allow our fervor for electoral victory to overshadow our unwavering commitment to democracy and national unity.”
The final list of candidates that will be contesting the elections will be released by the commission on April 10, 2024. On May 29, the general elections will take place to choose a fresh national assembly and the provincial legislature in each province. This marks the seventh general election held in the democratic era since the conclusion of apartheid in 1994.
As the election date approaches, citizens eagerly await the outcome of this historic event. The pledges signed today serve as a beacon of hope, reminding us that democracy thrives when parties unite in their dedication to the people.
