(The Post News) – South Africa’s Electricity Minister, Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, emerged unharmed from a car accident while traveling from North West to Gauteng.
According to Tsakane Khambane, the Minister’s spokesperson, the collision involved the Minister’s vehicle, accompanied by two protectors, and another car. Miraculously, all individuals involved received immediate medical attention, with the Minister himself discharged after a thorough examination, void of any serious injuries.
Khambane relayed the Ramagosa’s gratitude for his safety and extended well wishes for a swift recovery to those affected. The Minister’s incident closely follows a similar mishap involving former President Jacob Zuma’s convoy, which occurred towards the end of March 2024.
In March 2024, there were two accidents involving high-profile individuals in South Africa. The first one happened to former president Jacob Zuma’s convoy on March 28th, while they were driving from Nkandla to Eshowe for the uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) campaign. A suspected drunk driver crashed into their convoy, but fortunately, the former president and his protectors were unharmed. The second accident happened to a Minister shortly after the former president’s incident.
During an interview with the SABC, Musa Mkhize, the MK Head of Elections, said that “he believed the recent car crash involving the president was not an accident but a deliberate act”. Mkhize also mentioned that they had been expecting such an event to occur and that the president had been warned about it beforehand. He went on to express his gratitude to the members of the Presidential Protection Unit for their efforts in keeping the president safe.
Authorities apprehended a 51-year-old suspect, charging him with drunk driving, reckless, and negligent driving. The suspect made a court appearance at eShowe Magistrate Court, securing release on R500 bail, with further proceedings scheduled for May 3rd, 2024.
