(The Post News) – The Ukrainian authorities reported that Russia fired missiles into downtown Chernihiv, a city in northern Ukraine. The missiles hit an eight-story apartment building, resulting in the death of seventeen people. Additionally, six individuals, including three children, were injured. This attack caused panic among the residents, as it was the first time the Ukrainian capital had been targeted in six weeks since the start of the Russia-Ukraine war. The incident took place on Wednesday morning, April 17th.
According to officials in Ukraine, their defense systems successfully intercepted all 31 missiles, but the debris from the intercepted missiles still caused damage to apartment buildings and led to injuries. Thirteen people, including a child, were hurt in the aftermath. As a precautionary measure, approximately 25,000 individuals, including around 3,000 children, sought refuge in the city’s subway stations, where they remained for about three hours while air raid sirens blared. Survivors, visibly shaken and some in tears, shared their terrifying experiences of narrowly escaping their homes after being startled awake by the deafening sounds of explosions. Emergency workers tended to them in the streets amidst the chaos.
Ukrainian emergency services said, “The rescue workers searched through partially demolished buildings and tall mounds of rubble.”
Based on the Illia Novikov report, the latest Russian bombardment came as the war has stretched into its third year and approaches what could be a critical juncture. A lack of further military support from Ukraine’s Western partners increasingly leaves it at the mercy of the Kremlin’s bigger forces. Through the winter months, Russia made no dramatic advance along the 1,000-kilometer, 620-mile front line, focusing instead on attrition warfare. However, Ukraine’s shortage of artillery ammunition, troops, and armored vehicles has allowed the Russians to gradually push forward.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called on Western countries to provide more air defense equipment, including surface-to-air Patriot-guided missile systems, to counter Russian terror. He said, “The recent Chernihiv strike could have been avoided if Ukraine had received enough air defense equipment and if the world’s determination to counter Russian aggression had been stronger. Ukraine recently ran out of air defense missiles while defending against a major missile and drone attack that destroyed one of its largest power plants. This attack was part of a recent Russian campaign targeting energy infrastructure.”
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said, “We need at least seven more Patriot batteries to protect our cities and economic centers from destruction.”
The defense ministry of Russia said, “A drone belonging to Ukraine was intercepted and shot down in the Tatarstan region on Wednesday morning. This incident took place in the same area that was targeted by Ukraine in early April, which was their most significant strike within Russia. The location of the incident was approximately 1,200 kilometers (745 miles) east of Ukraine.”
