Members of the uMkhonto we sizwe (MK) Party assembled at former president and current leader of the MK Party, Jacob Zuma’s, homestead in Nkandla, north of Kwazulu-Natal, on Thursday, April 25, for a campaign rally ahead of the elections on May 29. MK Party members were seen chanting and singing songs of praise for Zuma and the leadership of the MK Party. There have been concerns that the success of the MK party in the elections might be hindered by Zuma’s inability to be present in the party’s campaigns due to his ill health.
This was his first public appearance in the last two weeks. The Head of Elections of the party, Muzi Ntshingila, said that they were gathered to launch their final stage of the party’s election program called Mayibuye and to show Zuma that they are fully prepared for the elections and that they are indeed prepared to strengthen their literal program. He explained that they want to show their support for Zuma by intensifying their work on the ground and proving that their revolutionary aspirations can indeed be achieved, and they aim to assist, support, and strengthen Zuma’s vision and determination.
Sihle Ngubane, who is the Secretary General of the MK party, said that after winning court battles, the party’s current main focus is to intensify its election campaign, hence the launch of election trucks. “Today is a big day for MK. We are launching our biggest truck ever. The 30-ton, 12-meter-branded truck for the MK can take about 20 people on stage at the same time,” said Ngubane. He added that the party was also launching four branded vans that will go around the country, ensuring that, since the party is done with court cases, it will continue to focus on the campaign. The truck and the vans will help strengthen the party’s campaign.
While addressing the party members, Zuma said that even after democracy, the majority of black people in this country are still under oppression; they have been oppressing the have-nots. He said black people died and some were arrested for years while fighting for freedom, and yet some black people have turned against them and are acting like white people. “It is evident that the country is not where it is supposed to be, and our fellow black people have turned against us and are now acting like white people. They arrested us for nothing, doing the very same thing that the apartheid government did, and they still call themselves freedom fighters,” said Zuma. According to Zuma, the party is an arch, a powerful organization, and, just like Noah’s arch, it is going to save black people.
