( The Post News)– In Paris, French authorities allegedly arrested 45 people, including 12 officers, who were injured and hospitalized after a homemade explosive was set off on the sidelines of the march during protests. This incident occurred during the Workers’ Day celebration. When thousands of people gathered to march in protests across France’s capital to exercise their workers rights on Wednesday, May 1st, the aim of the protests was to address the issue of demands ranging from better salaries to good working conditions.
The protesters’ grievances primarily centered around the cost of living and proposed changes to unemployment benefits, and they also showed solidarity with Gaza in ceasefire negotiations. May Day is considered a worker’s holiday. During this holiday, workers can voice their concerns regarding the working environment. It can be an opportunity to air grievances. However, during the protests in France, riot police resorted to using tear gas and batons to disperse some of the demonstrators. To control the situation, protests started getting out of control and resulted in violence.
The cost of living and the reform of unemployment benefits contributed to the anger of the protesters.Pro-Palestinian groups joined the Paris rally, chanting slogans in support of people in Gaza. There were similar scenes in other parts of the world where people waved Palestinian flags to show solidarity with the people of Gaza.
According to the authorities, they estimated that the number of protesters in the French capital was approximately 18,000. A total of around 121,000 protesters took part in May Day rallies across France, while the CGT gave a figure of 200,000. However, it is still well below the threshold of more than two million people.Some protesters are determined to make makeshift Olympic rings to express dissatisfaction with the upcoming Summer Games, scheduled to start in less than three months.
France’s unions have warned of a potential strike during the Games unless the government adequately compensates individuals required to work during the summer season. In spite of the rising threat of a potential strike during the Olympics game, government authorities didn’t meet with union leaders, including the general secretary of the CGT union, one of France’s largest. Which had resulted in raising questions regarding the matter of the authorities decision to remain silent to the demands of the protests.
Nikos Mavrokefalos at the match said that they want to express solidarity with students in the United States who are facing great repression of their rights and their just demands at the march and want to send a message that workers say no to exploitation, no to poverty, and no to high prices. The authorities in France have not released any statements or comments about the situation that has transpired in a protests.
