(The Post News)- A driver who allegedly stabbed two of his female passengers in Tabeleview, Cape Town, over the weekend has been arrested. It is alleged that the driver stabbed the women following a disagreement over their destination. According to Captain F.C. van Wyk, who is the spokesperson for the Western Cape police, a 39-year-old man was arrested on May 8 in Brooklyn, Milnerton, after a case was opened on Tuesday by two women aged 20 and 21.
Daniso one of the victims
The incident happened on Saturday, May 4, when a group of five women requested a ride from their residential place to Dunoon, and the driver allegedly refused to drop them off at their intended destination. According to Silu Daniso, who was one of the victims, they needed to access an ATM and asked the driver to stop a petrol station, where they experienced problems and moved to the next petrol station.
Daniso said the driver became aggressive upon payment, refused to give them their change, and tried to force them out of the car after he refused to drop them off at Dunoon. She explained the events that occurred after they refused to get out of the car. Daniso said the driver drove them to Tableview police station, where the police told him to drop them off at their intended destination because they had paid more than their initial fare.
Things went south when the women realized that the driver was taking a different route from where they were going. Daniso said a fight broke out when one of her friends took out her phone and tried to take a video of him.
The driver tried to snatch the phone and throw it out the window, but they managed to snatch it back, and that is when he stopped the car. “We all ran; that’s when he ran after us and stabbed us,” said Daniso. Daniso went back to try and grab one of her friends that the driver was allegedly stabbing; according to her, she went back to grab her friend who was left behind. The driver then ran after both of them and stabbed her as well.
Daniso expressed that she now lives in fear and feels unsafe because her address was used when the ride was requested, and she is also concerned about other women who might encounter this man on other e-hailing services because, even though Bolt blocked him, he may be a driver at any of the other e-hailing services.
With regards to Bolt, Daniso said that when they initially reported the incident, Bolt said it would investigate the matter and only tried to make contact with them when the incident started trending and people called for Bolt to be shut down.
“Bolt has been trying to call us; it has been giving people our numbers without our concern. We’ve been getting calls from different people trying to counsel us,” she said. She added that Bolt tried to offer her a ride to the police station, but she refused because she no longer felt safe riding with him. The spokesperson for Bolt, Sandra Buyole, said that when they found out about the incident, the company immediately blocked the driver in question and began investigations.
According to Buyole, the company puts the safety and security of its clients first and does not tolerate any kind of behavior that puts the riders’ safety at risk. The accused, who is facing charges of assault with an intent to do grievous bodily harm, is expected to appear before the Cape Town Magistrate Court today.
