(The Post News)– Gauteng police have apprehended two suspects linked to the murder of five-year-old Ditebogo Junior Phalane. The heartbreaking incident occurred during a botched hijacking in Soshanguve over the weekend. The young boy lost his life, leaving the community in shock and grief. On May 10, the suspects attempted to hijack Ditebogo’s father’s Toyota bakkie.
Armed and desperate, they confronted the family, leading to a violent struggle. Tragically, the suspects shot the innocent child, who later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. The incident sent shockwaves through the neighborhood, prompting swift action from law enforcement. National spokesperson Brigadier Athlende Mathe confirmed the suspects’ arrest on Thursday morning.
Alongside the arrests, the police seized crucial evidence. The vehicle used during the hijacking was recovered, providing a critical link to the crime. Additionally, authorities found a car jamming device, a firearm, and a stolen vehicle in the suspects’ possession. Police Minister Bheki Cele visited Phalane’s grieving family, offering comfort and support.
During his address to the Soshanguve community and members of the SAPS Stabilization Team, Cele emphasized the importance of community cooperation. He urged residents to come forward with any information that could assist the ongoing investigation. Furthermore, he called on officers to take a tough stance against crime, ensuring justice for young Ditebogo. General Fannie Masemola, the national police commissioner, announced the deployment of additional policing resources and personnel to the area.
The goal is to address the high levels of criminality and prevent similar tragedies. The loss of a child has galvanized the community, and authorities are committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice. As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of Ditebogo Junior Phalane.
His memory serves as a reminder of the urgent need for collaboration between law enforcement and residents. Together, they can create safer neighborhoods and protect vulnerable members of society.
