(The Post News)– As South Africa approaches the upcoming elections, legendary singer Vicky Sampson has once again stepped into the spotlight.
Known for her iconic anthem “African Dream,” which united the nation during the 1995 Rugby World Cup, Sampson now aims to recreate that magic with her latest song, “You are the light.”
The song is set to drop on election day (May 29), this powerful track is being hailed as the new “anthem of unity” for the country.
Reflecting on the last 30 years of South African democracy, Sampson acknowledges that the road towards an “African Dream” has been multifaceted.
While many have experienced newfound freedoms and opportunities, millions still grapple with poverty, limited access to education and healthcare, and scarce job prospects.
Sampson believes that the next chapter of the dream necessitates addressing these challenges head-on, ensuring equitable resource distribution, and fostering collective responsibility to build a more inclusive society.
In collaboration with artist Mahlatze Vokal, Sampson’s new song carries an evoking message. She hopes that South Africans will resonate with its lyrics, which emphasise the need for continued vigilance in upholding democratic ideals.
She said, “Corruption, crime, and unemployment persist in many communities, serving as a reminder that democracy is an ongoing process. Citizens must actively participate and remain committed to justice and equality.”
As Africa Day approaches, Sampson emphasises that the African Dream is not a singular vision but a mosaic of aspirations.
“It reflects the rich diversity of aspirations across the continent, encompassing different objectives. For some, it’s about building a thriving agricultural sector; for others, it involves harnessing technological innovation or preserving cultural heritage. Ultimately, the African Dream aims to create a continent where every voice is heard, every potential is nurtured, and every story is celebrated,” she added.
Sampson’s wishes for South Africa are rooted in equality and empowerment. She envisions a nation where cultural diversity is celebrated rather than divisive.
Her dream includes a society where everyone, regardless of race, gender, or socio-economic background, has the tools and opportunities to reach their full potential. As citizens of South Africa prepare to go cast their votes on voting day, “You are the light” serves as a reminder that unity and collective action are essential for realising the African Dream.
