(The Post News)- Today, the peaceful morning stillness along the N2 near Queen Nandi Drive in Durban was disrupted by the sounds of a bold cash-in-transit (CIT) heist, shattering the tranquility.
This latest cash-in-transit incident has sparked growing worries among law enforcement in KwaZulu-Natal, intensifying fears over the growing frequency and audacity of such criminal endeavours.
In the early hours of the morning, a group of assailants executed a well-planned attack on a cash van, unleashing chaos on the road, as they detonated an explosive device to breach the vehicle’s fortified doors.
The robbers, heavily armed with AK47 and R5 assault rifles, audaciously engaged in gunfire with a police officer who inadvertently found himself trailing behind the targeted van.
Fortunately, the officer emerged unscathed from the exchange, but the perpetrators managed to evade capture, triggering an intensive manhunt by authorities.
Robert Netshiunda, the spokesperson for the police in the region, expressed grave concerns over the incident and highlighted the calculated nature of the attack.
He highlighted the concerning pattern wherein criminals appear to have detailed knowledge of the movement, timing, and contents of cash-in-transit vehicles, prompting important inquiries about potential leaks of sensitive information within the security apparatus.
Netshiunda stressed the crucial need to not only capture the perpetrators but also uncover the origins of their insider intelligence, vital for preventing future heists.
The consequences of the heist extended beyond the immediate crime scene, as the closure of all northbound lanes on the N2 for evidence collection resulted in extensive traffic congestion, disrupting both commuter travel and commercial activities.
Police are working very hard to catch the criminals and understand the complex network of people involved in allowing such bold crimes to happen. This incident reminds everyone of the difficulties authorities face in protecting the honesty of financial transactions and keeping people safe as they travel through the area’s roads.
As the investigation progresses, the people of KwaZulu-Natal are closely watching the efforts to achieve justice and bring back peace after this bold attack on security and stability.
