(The Post News)- Calls for justice resonate through the heartbroken streets of Soshanguve as residents demand protection and accountability from the police following the killing of two children, Pfumo (7) and Tinyiko Mashaba (4) at their house in the Changing Spot Informal Settlement.
On Sunday, June 2, unknown perpetrators, allegedly targeting the children’s father, opened fire and killed two children who were sleeping in their home at the time of the incident.
The father of two kids, who was not there when the crime occurred, appears to have been the target of a recent home invasion, according to preliminary findings.
According to reports, the suspects wreaked havoc at a neighboring tavern before carrying out the horrible attack on the Mashaba family, injuring six people and killing two more.
“This should not have happened. Such a thing is not fair. It is inappropriate for two adults to disagree in front of children. We need justice because what occurred in Soshanguve is unacceptable. We are scared,” says a heartbroken community member, capturing the overwhelming sense of agony and terror.
The tragedy has rekindled long-standing concerns about the township’s rising crime rates, highlighting the urgent need for effective police intervention.
Authorities stated that in preliminary investigations, the culprits burned the small house where these unfortunate people took safety in addition to taking their lives in a horrifying act of carelessness.
Residents had previously petitioned for the deployment of South African National Defence Force (SANDF) personnel to support law enforcement efforts and stem the violence that was taking place in their neighbourhoods as they were scared and frustrated.
Less than a month ago, during an anti-crime march, Police Minister Bheki Cele addressed the Soshanguve community in response to the outcry following the killing of five-year-old Ditebogo Phalane. He gave assurances and promised to seek justice for the victims and their bereaved families.
Police are working together with locals to find suspects and make an arrest soon.
Justice and Correctional Services Minister Ronald Lamola has condemned the brutal killing of two children and has expressed his utmost outrage and condemnation of the heinous and senseless killing of two young children in Soshanguve.
“It is unconscionable that such horrific indent occurs during a period when our country is commemorating Child Protection Week. It highlights the urgent need for swift action from law enforcement to bring perpetrators to book. The full might of the law must be demonstrated to ensure justice for the victims and their families.” said Minister Lamola.
Lamola added that the brutal murder of innocent lives, including a man and a woman, and the injuring of four others, is a stark reminder of the evil that society must work tirelessly to eliminate.
