(The Post News)– On Saturday afternoon June 8, in Thulamahashe, Mpumalanga, at around 4:05 p.m., a cash-in-transit robbery took place, leaving a security guard officer injured in the process.
The Fidelity security armoured vehicle which was carrying money from retail outlets around Thulamahashe to the deport, was hit by a silver Mercedes-Benz car.
Hawk’s spokesperson, Captain Dineo Lucy Sekgotodi, said “A Toyota Hilux bakkie that was escorting Fidelity was attacked by two VW polo cars. They began shooting and the driver of the bakkie got shot and injured in the process. He was taken to the hospital for medical treatment.”
She also stated that the two VW vehicles followed the armoured vehicle and fired it until it stopped. The suspects then forced the driver and the crew out of the vehicle, dragged them into the bushes and took their firearms with them.
“There were about 20 suspects and all were wearing balaclavas, gloves, and bulletproof vests, and they were Zulu-speaking people that attacked the armoured vehicle. The suspects blew the armoured vehicle using explosives, and an undisclosed amount of money was robbed.” She added.
“The armoured vehicle was destroyed using explosives, and the perpetrators escaped with an unknown amount of cash from the scene,” said the Hawks.
“Afterward, the suspects headed in the direction of Dwarsloop, and community members arrived at the crime scene to loot the remaining money lying around.”
A case docket for cash-in-transit robbery, attempted murder and armed robbery was registered for advanced investigation.
Police request anyone with information to come forward and contact the investigation officer, D/W/O Albert de Lange, at 071-481-2815 and all the information brought forward will be kept confidential.
Sekgotodi emphasised that the Hawks are once again appealing to the public and encouraging them to avoid contaminating the crime scene as it is dangerous because there might be some explosives which were not blazed during the blast.
