(The Post News)- Introducing the long-awaited arrival of the Mercedes-AMG C63 S E performance to South Africa after an extensive two-year wait. Departing from its traditional V8 engine roots, this flagship model now boasts a cutting-edge F1-inspired hybrid powertrain, setting a new standard for performance and innovation in the automotive industry.
Underneath the bonnet lies a 2.0I four-cylinder engine different from the one used in the SL43 and C43 4Matic.
This time it is enforced with a lager turbocharger for a claimed output of 350kW at 6,725 rpm and 545 Nm from 5,250 rpm quantities that make it the most powerful series produced four cylinders in the world.
The turbocharger also includes a unified electric motor (driven by a 400V high voltage system) that acts as an anti-lag system for improved boost pressure at lower RPMs.
Adding to the intrigue of the Mercedes-AMG C63 S E performance is its impressive internal firepower, highlighted by a hybrid drive system.
A 6.1 kWh battery pack fuels an exhilarating synchronous electric motor, which seamlessly distributes power to the drive axle through an automated two-speed transmission, promising an electrifying driving experience.
Based on Mercedes-AMG, the set up gives a peak output of 150 kW for 10 seconds and a continuous output of 70 kW, giving the C63 S E amazing performance and a total system output of up to 500 kW. In the meantime, the maximum torque weighs an impressive of 1,020 Nm.
Regardless of its performance with both power units on song, the C63 S E performance driving way from 0-100 km/h in 3.4 seconds and reaching its electronic top speed of 250 km/h and its customers have other options for extending this to 280km/h.
The hybrid system offers electronic-only driving that ranges of up to 13 km, making a difference when stuck in a slow-paced city grind.
The car’s agility is supported by a front axle with custom steering knuckles and a rear axle designed for dynamic handling. Drivers can switch between three suspension settings such as Comfort, Sport, and Sport+, to tailor the driving experience to their preferences.
The team at Mercedes-AMG fitted the M3-rival with a standard drive axle that operates at a maximum steering angle of 2.5°.
At a speed below 100km/h the wheels turn in the opposite direction to the front wheels, which enhances handling, and at a speed above 100 km/h the wheels turn in parallel to the rear wheels an eye-catcher that enhances handling balance.
This model comes with 19-inch wheels as standard, but 20-inch wheels are also available. Both options are paired with a robust AMG braking system.
Inside, the car boasts AMG sports seats, a customisable MBUX infotainment system, and various display options, including a head-up display. The starting price is R2,476,800, which includes a two-year warranty and a five-year maintenance plan.
For fans, there’s a special “F1 Edition” available in the first year of sales.
