Police confirm arrest of a 35-years-old man in connection to the tragic death of two young girls who were burnt in their home in Soshanguve.
(The Post News)- Law enforcement authorities have made a big breakthrough by confirming the arrest of a man who is suspected of being involved in the horrific killings of four people, including two young girls, in Soshanguve last week.
Tragically, Tinyiko and Mpfumo Mashaba, who were four and seven years old, respectively, killed in the fire that destroyed their home in the Changing Spot informal settlement in Soshanguve.
Their mother alleged, that the girls had been shot before the fire consumed their house.
The detained suspect is allegedly connected to an additional incident that happened at a nearby tavern and saw six people being shot in a blatant attack by unidentified shooters.
Sadly, two of the victims passed away from their wounds on the spot and four more were quickly taken to a local hospital in need of immediate care.
Police spokesperson Lt-Col Mavela Masondo provided information about the arrest, stating that the 35-year-old suspect was apprehended in Akasia on Sunday.
Moreover, law enforcement officials succeeded in seising a car that was allegedly used in these horrific crimes.
Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo underlined that the investigation is still ongoing and suggested more arrests might be made as the investigation moves further.
Emphasising the seriousness of the charges brought against the person in custody, Masondo stated, “the arrested suspect is expected to make an appearance before the Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, where he will face charges including four counts of murder and four counts of attempted murder.”
Masondo reminded the public that the search for more possible suspects continues to be a high priority for law enforcement organisations, even as the community struggles with shock and grief in the aftermath of these horrific events.
Police authorities believe that even while the investigation is still ongoing, the key suspect’s detention is a major step toward bringing justice to the victims and their families and offers a sense of hope for closure in a community devastated by needless tragedies.
The urgency for intervention was visible, especially following the tragic killing of five-year-old Ditebogo Phalane, which sparked outrage and prompted a collective call for action.
Just weeks ago, during an anti-crime march, Police Minister Bheki Cele directly engaged with the Soshanguve community, acknowledging their grievances, and vowing to pursue justice for the victims and their grieving families.
Minister Cele’s presence and assurances during the march served as hope for the community, instilling confidence in the authorities’ commitment to upholding law and order.
By honouring his promise to address the pressing issues surrounding Soshanguve, Cele has demonstrated a proactive stance in confronting crime and ensuring accountability within law enforcement.
