(The Post News)- Members of the Temba police recovered a rifle and a hijacked vehicle while responding to a shooting incident and ongoing robbery in Temba on Wednesday morning, June 12.
The robbery occurred as a delivery van was making a delivery at Manyeleti in Temba, with an escort vehicle observing from a distance.
Tshwane Communication coordinator Warrant officer Johan Van Dyk said it is reported that three suspects attacked the cigarette delivery van and the escort vehicle, firing several rounds before fleeing the scene with several cartons of cigarettes.
Police pursued the suspects to the Mashimong section, where the suspects began shooting at the police. The suspects managed to exit their vehicle, abandoning the firearm and cigarettes, and escaped in another getaway vehicle.
He said the police recovered a rifle with a filed-off serial number, two empty magazines, twenty-four (24) cartons of cigarettes, nineteen (19) rifle casings, thirteen (13) pistol casings, three live rounds, and two sets of number plates.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the vehicle had been reported hijacked in January 2024 in Temba. The firearm will be sent to a forensic laboratory for ballistic testing to determine if it has been used in the commission of other crimes,” Van dyk added
The Acting District Commissioner of Tshwane, Commander Brigadier Samuel Thine, commends the members for their swift action and dedication.
