(The Post News) – Renowned actor Sir Ian McKellen, known for his illustrious career spanning over six decades on stage and screen, is currently on the path to recovery after a fall during a performance of “Player Kings,” a reimagining of Shakespeare’s “Henry IV,” at London’s Noël Coward Theatre.
McKellen, 85 years old and portraying the iconic role of Sir John Falstaff in Robert Icke’s adaptation, expressed on Tuesday, June 18, his eagerness to return to work after the incident.
He conveyed deep gratitude to the medics who attended to him following the tumble on Monday night, emphasising that he is “hugely indebted” to their care.
The incident led to the cancellation of the subsequent performance on Tuesday to allow McKellen to recuperate.
In an official statement released by the producers of “Player Kings,” they expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support received from the audience and the public following McKellen’s fall.
The statement assured everyone that McKellen underwent a scan, and medical professionals from the NHS have confirmed he is expected to recover fully and swiftly.
The actor himself is reported to be in good spirits despite the incident.
“We are immensely grateful to the brilliant NHS team and the two doctors who were present in the audience for their prompt action and ongoing support,” the statement read.
“Player Kings,” which delves into the political intrigue and personal struggles of King Henry IV during the turbulent 15th century, features McKellen alongside Richard Coyle and Toheeb Jimoh, known for his role in the hit series “Ted Lasso.”
The production, spanning a demanding 12-week run, showcases McKellen’s enduring commitment to the craft and his passion for bringing Shakespearean drama to life.
