(The Post News)- The Limpopo Provincial Government has found itself at the centre of a heated debate following the appointment of Kgabo Mahoai as the new Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Treasury.
Mahoai’s controversial past has raised eyebrows, with opposition parties and critics questioning his suitability for the MEC role.
The Limpopo Provincial Government is standing by its decision to appoint Mahoai as the new Treasury MEC, despite controversy surrounding his past.
Mahoai was previously dismissed as Director-General of the Department of International Relations and Cooperation in 2021 amid allegations of irregular expenditure totaling R118 million.
Although he is challenging his dismissal in the Labour Court, the opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) has expressed strong reservations about his appointment, citing concerns over his trustworthiness in managing public funds.
Limpopo DA leader Lindy Wilson questioned how someone accused of financial mismanagement could be entrusted with the province’s treasury.
The incident involved a tender for offices and accommodation for South African diplomats in New York, US.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) has been vocal in its opposition to Mahoai’s appointment, citing concerns over his trustworthiness in managing public funds.
“It is unacceptable that someone accused of financial mismanagement is now responsible for overseeing the province’s treasury,” said DA leader Wilson.
“This appointment raises serious questions about the Limpopo government’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
Despite the backlash, the Limpopo Provincial Government has defended its decision to appoint Mahoai. According to a spokesperson, Mahoai’s appointment was based on his experience in public service and his proven history in financial management,” she said.
The government has also emphasised that Mahoai’s dismissal was not finalised, and he is therefore not guilty of any wrongdoing.
The public has been divided on the appointment, with some expressing concern over Mahoai’s past while others have defended his ability to manage finances effectively.
“We need someone who can deliver results, regardless of their past mistakes. If Mahoai can prove himself, then we should give him a chance,” expressed a Limpopo resident.
While the government has defended its decision, opposition parties and critics remain sceptical. As the province navigates this controversy, one thing is clear, the public is watching closely, and Mahoai’s performance will be under intense scrutiny.
Only time will tell if he can redeem himself and prove his detractors wrong.
