(The Post News) – A truck and a minibus collision on the R42 Road near Delmas, Mpumalanga, claimed ten lives and seriously injured 24 other people.
The incident took place on Monday at around 1:00 a.m., as the spokesperson for the Mpumalanga community safety, security, and liaison department, Moeti Mmusi, indicated.
“Eight of the deceased were passengers in the minibus taxi, while two people were passengers in the truck. The deceased include the driver of the minibus taxi, and the victims were declared dead at the scene,” he said.
Mmusi also stated that all the deceased were declared dead on the scene.
Among the 24 people who sustained serious injuries, six from the minibus and 18 from the truck were quickly transported to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.
The reports indicate that the minibus taxi was initially heading along N12 Road from Johannesburg and was trying to return to R42.
“The taxi was moving towards Emalahleni, and it was also pulling a trailer while the bus truck was headed to Bronkhorspruit, meaning that the driver was trying to turn back to the N12 from R42 when the collision happened,” Mmusi added.
It is still unknown as to what might have been the cause of the incident, and investigations are ongoing.
The MEC for Community Safety, Security, and Liaison, Jackie Macie, expressed shock at the incident, pleading with motorists to exercise caution when driving.
“It is heartbreaking to see so many people losing their lives on the road. We are requesting more significant caution from drivers in order to avoid these tragedies,” Macie stated.
He sent his condolences to grieving families and wished those injured a rapid recovery.
