(The Post News)- The Gauteng Department of Health confirmed that a female patient, 35, died at George Mukhari Academic Hospital due to a fire outbreak.
This incident transpired on Monday night around 6:35 p.m. at the female psychiatric unit.
This mental health care patient was admitted to the hospital on Thursday, and thereafter the patient was put in the seclusion room on Monday for treatment.
When the fire broke, the fire bridge took measures to extinguish it, but as a result, the patient already had fatal injuries.
Approximately 17 other patients were lucky enough to be successfully evacuated and put on a different side of the psychiatric department.
The cause of the fire is unknown, as is what could have caused it; thus, the incident has been reported to South African Police Services.
According to Charles Mabaso, spokesman for the City of Tshwane Emergency Services Department, When firemen got to the scene, the hospital’s personnel had already used portable fire extinguishers to put out the fire in the hospital’s only isolation unit.
“A 35-year-old female patient sadly passed away after suffering burns within the unit. A doctor arrived on the spot and pronounced her dead.
According to Mabaso, firefighters used positive pressure ventilation to remove excessive smoke from the ward.
According to Motalatale Modiba of the department,
“A little fire started in the isolation room at approximately 6:35 p.m. To protect the patient’s safety and well-being, quick action was taken.
The fire department responded swiftly to contain and put out the fire, but sadly, the patient in the isolation chamber died from her injuries.”
Firefighters discovered the fire had been put out when they arrived, according to the city of Tshwane emergency services department.
Seventeen other patients in the unit were successfully evacuated and temporarily relocated to a different wing of the psychiatric department as a precautionary measure.
Modiba claims that as part of the victim’s care following her hospital admission on June 20, she was put in the seclusion room on Monday.
Modiba stated that the police will be handling the investigation into the fire, as the reason for the incident is still unknown.
“The department would like to offer the patient’s family its sincere sympathies on the unexpected death of their daughter.
A debriefing will be conducted for the bereaved family as well as for the other patients in the family. Additionally, counselling services will be provided to them.”
