(The Post News)- An infant was discovered deceased inside a garbage bin at T Estate in Inanda, Durban North, on Tuesday morning.
The spokesperson for the Reaction Unit of South Africa (RUSA), Prem Balram, said that early in the morning, they received a call asking for help, and the caller told the controller on duty that as three men and five dogs were going through the garbage, searching for recyclables, they discovered an infant abandoned on a dirt road.
The men informed neighbours, who immediately notified RUSA.
According to Balram, RUSA officers and paramedics arrived at the location and found the scene after a quick search.
He said that in a large black bag was a “newborn baby girl,” and paramedics discovered that she was not responsive and pronounced her dead at 09:07. He added that the efforts to track down the mother had begun.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson, Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo, said that following this incident, police in Verulam are looking into a case of concealment of birth.
Meanwhile, a mother who allegedly dumped her newborn baby girl in a resident’s backyard in Kuils River, Cape Town, is facing charges of child negligence and attempted murder.
On Sunday morning, 41-year-old Alana Jacobs was preparing for an early morning church service when she found the newborn infant in her backyard.
According to Jacobs, at about 09:30 a.m., she discovered an unclothed baby girl lying in the moist grass, with a portion of the umbilical cord still clinging to her belly button. Jacobs said that the baby still had blood on her and her umbilical cord was still connected, which were indications that she had been born recently.
Upon discovering the baby, Jacobs said that she could not believe what she was seeing and called out to her neighbours to come and see what she had discovered.
As they waited for an ambulance, she said a neighbour gave out milk and a clean blanket for the baby, and when the ambulance arrived together with the police, the baby was taken to Karl Bremer Hospital.
Jacobs said that she needed to know if the baby was fine and accompanied her to the hospital. The doctors told her that the baby was not in the best condition as her temperature was quite low, and they were going to do their best to make sure that she got better.
Jacobs left the hospital with the police to go look for the infant’s mother. She stated that she had seen a man in her backyard, and he ran when she called out to him, and that is when she found the baby.
Within 30 minutes, the police found the man, and he told them that his mother had instructed him to dump dirtbags at a house.
According to a police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie, Kuils River police arrested a 40-year-old mother, and they are looking into a case of attempted murder and child neglect.
He added that the mother is set to appear at the Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court.
