(The Post News)- The search for a person linked to the horrific killing of a lady on a Metrobus in Fleurhof early this morning, June 26, is being stepped up by Johannesburg metro police.
The incident happened on Helpmekaar Road at around 5:55 a.m. and resulted in the death of a 40-year-old female passenger.
A distress call about a gunshot on a Metrobus was received by the tactical response team, according to Johannesburg Metro Police spokeswoman Xolani Fihla.
Officers found the victim’s corpse inside the bus when they arrived at the site. “It appears that the victim was shot by an unidentified male assailant.”
“The perpetrator allegedly left the location in a white Volkswagen Polo sedan, which was noticed to have no license plates,” Fihla said.
A police spokesperson named Lt. Col. Mavela Masondo provided further information.
Describing the series of events that culminated in the horrific shooting. It’s believed that when the bus stopped, the suspect was already on board.
“The attacker shot the victim many times as she got closer to getting on the bus. The suspect then made a swift getaway by entering the white Volkswagen Polo that was parked and leaving the area,” said Masondo.
The incident alarmed the neighbourhood and forced the city to intervene.
In a social media post, Johannesburg’s transport MMC, Kenny Kunene, recognised the gravity of the issue. “I have received reports of a passenger being shot aboard a Metrobus in Fleurhof,” Kunene said.
As further information regarding the culprit and the reason behind the shooting is uncovered by investigations, police are still on site.
Authorities are pleading for anybody who knows anything about the event or the suspect’s location to come forward and help with the investigation that is still underway.
In an attempt to quickly catch the culprit and guarantee the safety of both commuters and locals, the Johannesburg metro police have increased patrols and checkpoints in the region.
For the time being, the community searches for answers while mourning the victim’s passing and waiting for justice.
