(The Post News)-The South African Cricket Club beat Afghanistan by nine wickets in the first semi-final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.
The Proteas gained a spot in the first-ever final, continuing their unbeaten run.
With 67 balls remaining and nine wickets secured, the Proteas won the match from start to finish. They are remarkably making it to eight unbeaten match records.
Afghanistan coach Jonathan Trott said when asked what he made of the pitch on ESPNcricinfo’s analysis show Timeout, “I don’t want to get myself into trouble, and I don’t want to come across as bitter or as a case of sour grapes.”
However, Aiden Markram, the Proteas captain, stated that the wickets that they’ve had throughout the competition have been pretty challenging.
“It’s hard to say that a wicket is not good because it can’t just always be a batter’s game, but I think if we reflect back on this wicket, we’ll probably be pretty happy that we’re not playing here again,” said Markram.
At the inning break, Jonathan Trott and Rashid Khan looked visibly frustrated. Despite the challenges, it was evident that the Proteas had the upper hand in the game.
Kagiso Rabada flattened the hopes of Afghanistan’s best player, Mohammed Nabi, when he hit two balls to the timber from a jaggery act.
A double-wicket dismissed Nabi as a batter, benefiting the Proteas with an effective delivery. A double-wicket maiden was achieved on the fourth ball.
Before the end of the match, Proteas batters made sure to pounce on every poorly delivered bowl by Afghanistan. They got 13 runs from the 5th over.
The 13 runs given up improved their chances, and the Proteas saw themselves on the path to victory. This ignited a historic win, setting them up to face either Australia or England in the T20 finals.
