(The Post News)- Award-winning artist Makhadzi revealed that she borrowed money to attend the 19th Annual BET Hip Hop Awards in Los Angeles, California.
Makhdzi and Tyla made South Africa proud by winning three awards between them over the weekend.
Makhadzi from Limpopo was nominated for the Viewers’ Choice Award for Best New International Act, and she beat fellow South African Tyler ICU and other international artists.
South African pop star Tyla won two BET awards for Best New Artist and Best International Act categories.
The newly appointed Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, honoured their achievements on X.
“Things are happening already; congratulations to both ladies. We want to ensure South Africans that we will not be a ministry that is satisfied with congratulating artists and creatives only but will go out and unearth more Tyla’s and Makhadzi’s. Help us discover more future superstars.”
Before the ceremony, Makhazi shared a prayer during an interview with MacG and Sol Phednuka on Podcast and Chill and revealed that she had borrowed money to cover the costs of the trip.
In December, Sunday World reported that the singer owed the South African Revenue Service (SARS) R6.6 million.
However, it was later reduced to R2.7 million by a tax consultant. Makhadzi confirmed the reports and said she was trying to clear the debt.
Makhadzi said that she is going through a lot, and it is not a secret. She pays SARS with all the money she makes monthly and does not have money for herself.
“So to travel, I have to go to Mashonisa (loan sharks).
My team had to borrow money for me so I could fly business class. She added that despite all the financial problems, she still needs to remain a “superstar.”
She went on to say that she believes in her career, and she did everything she could to attend the ceremony.
Makhazi explained that the organisers of the BET Awards did not pay for flight tickets to attend the ceremony but provided the nominees with accommodation and other necessities upon arrival.
“They just choose you, and like I say, choosing you means a lot. For you to come here, it’s up to you, but everything they will cater to you… but flights, they can’t fly you.”
