Former Basic Education minister, Angie Motshekga’s appointment as new minister of defence and military had South Africa talking.
(The Post News)- Placing qualified, capable, and committed ministers is essential for effective governance and policy implementation. Their expertise ensures informed decision-making while their commitment fosters public trust. The combination enhances the overall functionality and stability of the government.
Angie Motshekga, former Minister of Basic Education since 2009, previously held the positions of Chair of the African National Congress Women’s League (ANCWL) and Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Education in Gauteng. Motshekga has degrees from the University of the North in Bachelor of Arts in Education, the University of the Witwatersrand in Bachelor of Educational Science, and the University of the North in Master of Education.
As Minister of Basic Education she oversaw major curricular reforms including the expansion of the National School Nutrition Programme and the implementation of the Curricular and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS), which enhanced student attendance and focus on the classroom. Furthermore, there have been noticeable advancements.
Angie’s new position continues to make the rounds on the social media platforms as South Africans are amazed by her appointment. With a background in education, citizens are worried about how she can lead without an understanding of military culture nor experience in military oversight, which includes managing armed forces and strategic planning.
On the other hand, her appointment may be seen as a positive as it brings opportunities and challenges. One could say that she may bring a fresh point of view as well as innovation and modernization within the sector.
Motshekga’s success will depend on her ability to build a knowledgeable team and balance civilian oversight with the needs of the military.
Citizens of South Africa shared their points of view on socials with some saying we should not judge a book by its cover.
