(The Post News)- Makhadzi denied allegations that the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture (DSAC) has funded her for the past 14 months.
On Tuesday night, DSAC released a statement denying claims that it was not supporting Makhadzi after she said she had to pay for her travel expenses to the US for the BET Awards, where she won the Best New International Act award.
On Monday, Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture Gayton McKenzie announced that he would publish details of athletes, artists, and creatives who received funding from his department to show transparency in the funding process.
The minister had promised to release the names of the artists at 10am on Wednesday. However, in a statement, the department said that it had supported Makhadzi through performances valued at R230,000.
“DSAC strongly rejects the assertion that it has not supported Makhadzi. Over the past 14 months, Makhadzi has been booked by DSAC to perform in various national engagements, receiving as much as R230 000,” stated the statement.
This comes after Makhadzi revealed in an interview on Podcast and Chill that she had to borrow money from a loan shark to attend the BET award ceremony in the US last week.
In an official statement published on Wednesday, July 10, the Makhadzi Entertainment communication team clarified and corrected the ministry’s “misleading information.”
The statement stated that Makhadzi had not received funds from the DSAC in the past 14 months and had not applied for any.
The R230,000 she received from the department was for services she provided and was not part of the funding.
“We can affirm that the department reached out to Makhadzi to perform for the Presidential Inauguration and June 16 event which she did and the department paid her, that is not funding, however, a payment for service rendered.”
“DSAC had created confusion and made it appear as if Makhadzi was one of the recipients,” the communication team said.
The statement called on the DSAC Minister to publish the list of beneficiaries which would prove Makhadzi is on the right and stop diverting attention.
“It’s been a long and rough road and the ultimate goal is being recognised, and no deceitful information or smear campaign like the one from the National Department of Sports, Arts, and Culture aiming at destroying and dampening the spirit of the team Makhadzi will find expression,” the statement said.
