(The Post News)- The newly appointed Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton MacKenzie has made several public statements about bringing changes in his department.
Yesterday, July 9, in a media briefing, the newly appointed minister promised to provide financial support to athletes and artists for promotional success, instead of spending millions on superfans.
“There are so many allegations and denials regarding non-support to artists, creatives & sportspeople. I have asked for a full list to be published at 10am of financial beneficiaries. You cannot clean up without full transparency. We must do better Sport, Arts and Culture,” posted the minister on X.
He further stated in the briefing that he had stopped all the superfan’s trips.
“We have athletes and artists who are struggling to raise money to attend sporting events and exhibitions,” stated McKenzie.
According to the minister, money meant for superfans will be allocated to other things such as sponsoring artists and athletes.
The department revealed earlier this year, in February, that it paid for the superfan’s trip an amount of R1.3m to the 2023 Rugby Cup in France.
