(The Post News) – Edward Senzo Mchunu, the newly appointed Minister of Police, has unveiled his priorities to tackle the escalating crime rates in South Africa.
Serving as Minister since June 30, Mchunu, a politician and member of the African National Congress, has been a cabinet minister since May 2019 and previously held the position of Premier of KwaZulu-Natalin 2016.
In a media briefing on Monday in Pretoria, Mchunu highlighted his strategic goals to combat high-profile criminal cases, including the ongoing Senzo Meyiwa case, and to address critical issues such as corruption, gangsterism, and the alarming murder rates of women and children.
To address the rising and intolerable level of criminality in the country, Mchunu has stated his goals, which include access to artificial intelligence, a strong stance against corruption, identifying gangsterism, and stopping the murder of women and children.
According to Mchunu, crime rates are rising nationwide, they vary from province to province and would need to be considered when putting the national crime prevention strategy into practice.
In addition to stepping up internal efforts to stop the flow of guns from police stations into the hands of criminals, immediate action would be taken to address the rise in gang violence in the Western Cape, areas of Nelson Mandela Bay and Gauteng.
According to Mchunu, the construction mafias operating around the country would continue to receive priority attention to deal with their effect on the industry and the broader economy.
“It is a great honour and a great responsibility for us to be entrusted with making South Africans feel secure. The nation’s crime rates are unacceptably high and are rising. We must take decisive action to control this. Every province has a different level and kind of crime.
“We must keep this in mind as we implement the integrated national crime prevention strategy.”
He added that currently, contact crimes such as rapes and murders, kidnappings, and hijackings for ransom are the most common crimes in the nation.
“Law enforcement should take immediate action in response to the killings of women and children, which continue to be a major source of worry. Our goal is clear: every person in our country must feel safe, ” said Mchunu.
