(The Post News) – Pre-season matches are underway as clubs worldwide prepare for the 2024/25 season with friendly games.
On Monday, June 15, the Orlando Pirates played against Sevilla FC.
Pirates, famous for its intense rivalry with Kaizer Chiefs in the most-watched derby globally, has a rich history.
The club won the CAF Champions League in 1995, shortly after South Africa was readmitted to international football following the lifting of ban sanctions from the Apartheid regime.
Sevilla FC, established in 1890, holds the distinction of being the oldest club in Spain.
The club boasts an impressive record of seven UEFA Europa League titles.
However, Sevilla has faced recent challenges with winning, finishing 14th in the La Liga standings.
Last night it was seen losing to the Soweto Giants, and Orlando Pirates. Buccaneers beat the club 2-nil, scoring from the first half and also the second half.
The victory for Orlando Pirates positions them as favourites for a strong performance in both the South African League and CAF competitions. Meanwhile, Sevilla is perceived as needing significant improvement and restructuring.
In addition to the Buccaneers training abroad during the pre-season, Kaizer Chiefs is also in Turkey, and Mamelodi Sundowns is currently in Germany for their preparations.
Buccaneers fans are happy and congratulate the club for beating the Spanish club while bashing Amakhosi and Masandawana.
“History is recorded that we beat Sevilla. Others are embarrassing themselves in Germany and Turkey,” commented Tshepo Tshepo Sebogodi on Goal post on Facebook.
Mandoh Hlongwana replied, “They should come back to the South African League to be beaten by the newly promoted team.” The comment was referring to the Buccaneers being beaten by Cape Town Spurs FC once 2-1 last season and drawn 1-1 second leg.
Some critics mocked Sevilla, suggesting they played with a B team, while others joked that it was actually their under-15 team that secured a 2-0 victory.
