(The Post News)- Ayacucho authorities stated that the fatal bus incident killed at least 25 people in Peru’s Andes mountains, while others were injured.
The incident occurred on Tuesday around 5 a.m. local time on Los Libertadores Highway when a bus carrying over 40 people plummeted over 650 feet into a ravine in the Ayacucho region.
The bus was travelling from the capital, Lima, to the southern city of Ayacucho in the south-central Andes.
The country’s interior ministry said on Twitter that even though emergency crews faced difficulties reaching the site of the incident, the Peruvian Police were currently conducting a rescue operation, adding that 17 people were injured.
However, those people who were injured are in the Mariscal Hospital in Ayacucho, Peru, being treated for their injuries.
It is still unknown how bad their injuries are, while their relatives are waiting for news about their loved ones outside the hospital. The cause of the incident is still unknown.
Johnny Rolando Valderrama, who’s the head of a highway protection division, said that the area is difficult to access for emergency services, adding that police are currently busy with an investigation into the cause of the incident to get to the root of the crash.
Photos shown around Peruvian news outlets and on social media indicate the state of the damaged bus lying on its side in a grassy area, with debris strewn on the ground.
According to official data, last year, the South American country recorded around 3,130 deaths as the result of more than 87,000 crashes. The cause of these incidents has not been determined yet.
Deadly horrible incident crashes seem like they are common around Peru’s precarious mountain roads.
A bus accident occurred in April 2021, killing 20 people and leaving 14 injured in Peru’s Áncash department, around 280 miles from Lima.
In February 2022, at least 20 people were also killed and 33 were injured in a bus incident when a bus derailed and fell into a 330-foot ravine in the Pataz province, in northern Peru.
