(The Post News- After weeks of increasing pressure from Democrats, US President Joe Biden finally withdrew from the race to be the next president.
He announced on Sunday evening that he was finally leaving the 2024 race and approved Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee.
While he is still recovering from COVID at his beach house in Delaware, he wrote a letter to X stating, “It has been the greatest honour of my life to serve you as your president.”
He also said, “While I have intended to seek re-election, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.”
This move makes Biden the first US president to pull out of an election so late in the game and the first to exit due to concerns about his mental acuity and physical health.
Early this year, a special counsel report released information stating that the 81-year-old president was suffering from mental decline; they even mentioned that he didn’t recall the time he was vice president and not remembering the year of his son’s death.
House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican, has urged Biden to step down, stating that “if Joe Biden is unfit to seek re-election, he is unfit to hold the presidency.”
Biden (81) further said, “I believe today what I always have: that there is nothing America can’t do when we do it together. We just have to remember we are the United States of America.”
Democrats characterised the debate between Biden and Trump as a ‘catastrophic failure’ and ‘an excruciating train wreck after Biden seemed disoriented, struggled to articulate his thoughts, and paused awkwardly.
Despite previously claiming he was the most capable of beating Trump in the forthcoming election, the 81-year-old Biden faced pressure from his party to withdraw his candidature.
He had multiple conversations with Kamala Harris on Sunday ahead of the announcement, according to someone familiar with the talks.
A source close to the president recently said ‘we’re close to the end’ after former President Barack Obama, who selected Biden as his vice president, reportedly expressed concerns about his friend’s re-election bid.
President Biden said on X, “I will speak to the nation later this week in more detail about my decision.”
