(The Post News)- In a press conference held at PSL Parktown headquarters in Johannesburg on Wednesday, July 24, the chair of the Premier Soccer League (PSL), Irvin Khoza confirmed Betway as the new premiership sponsor.
This follows the announcement of DStv pulling out as PSL’s main sponsor.
Several reports state that financial issues have forced the DStv MultiChoice company to withdraw from its position as the PSL’s main sponsor for the upcoming season, formerly known as the DStv Premiership.
The original agreement, signed in September 2020, was a five-year deal to serve as the premier sponsor of South Africa’s topflight football league, set to conclude in September 2025.
However, reports alleging financial constraints forced the DSTV to withdraw from its position as PSL’s main sponsor.
In response to the sponsorship gap, Betway has stepped in with a three-year deal worth R900 million, as competitions are expected to start with the MTN-8 on August 3, followed by the league around September.
This marks a clean slate for the 2024/25 season and sets a new record in the history of South African football, with Betway being the first company to pay this much as a sponsor.
The European company announced the partnership on Facebook: “Betway is thrilled to announce a new partnership with the Premier Soccer League. One that acknowledges where our game has come from, celebrates what we proudly are today, and looks to a future that everyone with football in their blood must continue to build together.”
The deal is a good one that might see PSL’s financial problems solved, and we might see Virtual Assistant Referee (VAR) being introduced in South Africa.
SABC Sports publication once reported that South Africa’s best referee, Victor Gomez, confirmed, “We had a meeting recently,, and I know that it’s on the way now. Now we are progressing very fast. Now we’re sitting for some budgetary cost in the next two weeks, and that’s how far we are.”
