MEC Matome Chiloane Suspends Pretoria High School for Girls Principal for three months amid racism Allegations and deputy Principal appointed as Acting Principal.
(The Post News)- Pretoria High School for Girls has once again found itself at the centre of a racism storm, culminating in the suspension of Principal Philipa Erasmus for her failure to address allegations of racism. This disciplinary action follows the suspension of 12 learners who dared to speak out against the racism they experienced at the school.
The allegations, linked to derogatory WhatsApp conversations between white learners, dismissed the concerns of black learners as insignificant, sparking widespread outrage. Many called for Erasmus’ resignation, leading to her precautionary suspension for 90 days, pending an investigation into ignored learner complaints.
MEC Matome Chiloane emphasized the need for a thorough investigation, appointing an acting principal to ensure continuity. He urged learners, teachers, and parents to report any offenses against the school’s code of conduct, stressing educator support in developing learners.
The ANC Youth League and EFF welcomed the suspension, with the EFF vowing to monitor the situation to ensure racism is eradicated. This incident echoes a similar 2016 controversy surrounding racial comments about black hair.
Chiloane’s visit to the school and media briefing highlighted the seriousness of the allegations, emphasizing the need for accountability. The district’s appointment of an acting principal ensures stability during the investigation.
The ANC Youth League’s picket outside the school gate demonstrated their support for the suspended learners, demanding action against the school’s leadership. EFF Chairperson Obakeng Ramabodu reiterated their commitment to rooting out racism, ensuring a safe environment for all learners.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle against racism in our schools. The swift action taken by the MEC and the support from political organizations underscore the importance of addressing these allegations and creating a safe, inclusive environment for all learners.
