The killing of Haniyeh, a top Hamas official, has sparked fears of a wider regional conflict as Israel and Hezbollah’s hostilities intensify.
(The Post News)- Ismail Haniyeh, the leader of the Hamas political party, was assassinated in Iran just hours after attending the inauguration of the new president. The incident marks the second high-profile killing of a militant commander with ties to Iran within a span of hours.
According to reports, Haniyeh and one of his bodyguards were killed when the building they were in was struck.
The assassination comes on the heels of Israel’s vow to target Haniyeh and other Hamas leaders in retaliation for the October 7 attack on Israel, which resulted in significant loss of life and kidnappings. While Israel has not claimed responsibility for the killing, reports suggest they are the prime suspects.
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with senior Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri describing it as a “grave escalation.” Musa Abu Marzouk, a member of Hamas’ Political Bureau, vowed that Haniyeh’s death would not go unpunished.
The assassination occurs at a critical juncture in the Middle East, with Hamas and Israel engaged in intense fighting in Gaza and humanitarian conditions deteriorating rapidly. The growing hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah threaten to engulf the region in a wider conflict.
