(The Post News)- A catastrophic incident has unfolded off the South African coast, where the Ultra Galaxy cargo ship, carrying a load of fertiliser, ran aground and broke into four pieces due to a severe storm. The resulting oil spill has sparked a massive clean-up operation, with 125 community members dispatched to assist.
The South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) has taken charge of the response, working in conjunction with the Department of Transport to mitigate the effects of the spill. The primary focus is on preventing further fuel leakage and safely removing the wreck.
Tebogo Ramatjie, SAMSA spokesperson, emphasized the complexity of the operation, given the vessel’s breakage and the need for careful planning to remove the remaining fuel and wreck safely.
The oil contingency plan has been activated to prevent pollution, minimize damage, and mitigate the effects of the spill. Despite challenges posed by bad weather, SAMSA has made progress in assessing the damage and containing the spill.
In a fortunate turn of events, the 18 Filipino crew members were rescued safely. Residents along the West Coast are urged to report any debris washed ashore and warned against attempting to salvage the wreckage themselves.
The incident highlights the importance of effective emergency response and collaboration between authorities to minimize environmental impact.
