A devastating collision between a bus and train in Mpumalanga leaves six pupils dead and many injured, sparking calls for improved road safety measures.
(The Post News)- A heart-breaking incident occurred in Mpumalanga when a bus carrying approximately 30 pupils collided with a train, resulting in the loss of six young lives. The bus was transporting pupils from school on Wednesday afternoon when the tragic accident happened.
The collision occurred when the bus crossed the railroad track as the train was approaching. One pupil succumbed to injuries while receiving medical care, while five others lost their lives at the scene. Eleven pupils sustained severe injuries, while the remaining eleven, including the bus driver and train operator, suffered minor injuries.
Jackie Macie, MEC for the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security, and Liaison, expressed shock and distress over the incident, calling for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident. He extended condolences to the affected families and wished a speedy recovery to those injured.
Macie emphasized the importance of accountability and urged public transportation owners to ensure that drivers are thoroughly screened, trained, and educated on road safety. He believes that such accidents can be prevented with proper measures in place.
Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) announced that an inquiry will be conducted to determine the cause of the accident and expressed deepest condolences to the families of the deceased pupils.
The scholar transport driver has been arrested and is receiving medical care in the hospital. A forensic team has been dispatched to the scene to investigate the cause of the collision. Some pupils remain in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
