Residents of Qwaqwa express feelings of dissatisfaction over VIP toilets provided by Executive Mayor Malekula Melato, viewing it as a disrespectful approach to service delivery.
(The Post News)- On Thursday, August 8, Maluti A Phofung (MAP) local municipality in the Free State launched the 6,500 VIP toilet honey sucker project, which led to mixed reactions among the residents.
The situation got even worse as some of the residents felt like they had been taken for granted by what the municipality is calling a rendering of service delivery.
Their main concern is that these VIP toilets have been rejected multiple times by the other residents from within the province for their poor status and not being in the conditions that can be utilised by human beings, regardless of their poverty.
They further pointed fingers at the municipal leaders, believing that they only accessed cheaper items that would enable them to loot for the remaining finances.
Speaking to The Post News, Millicent Mosia, one of the frustrated residents, said it’s better to have no toilet than to be proud of using such ‘useless’ toilets that have a bad stink and removable seats that may lead to the falling of children while using them.
Mosia says this is a total insult to the residents of Qwaqwa, who are only being recognised during the election campaigns.
“We have been fooled for too long by those who think they know more than us. How can they call this ‘rubbish’ a provision of service delivery while other municipalities not far from ours respect and take care of their residents?” she asked.
Another resident, Tshediso Mbatha, says these toilets will help them a lot since they have been waiting for them for too long.
He is glad that with his pension grant, he will no longer buy a toilet because the municipality has met him halfway.
However, the executive mayor, Malekula Melato, is happy that service delivery is rendered to the residents, although it cannot be provided all at the same time.
