The police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths of three siblings from Evaton Primary School in Sebokeng tragically passed away on school grounds on Monday and another learner who died at Tsakane Secondary School in Ekurhuleni.
(The Post News)- On Monday, August 12, Evaton Primary School in Sebokeng, Gauteng South, witnessed three tragic occurrences that shook the staff and some learners.
Three siblings attending the same school died after being brought to the school’s sick room because they were not feeling well.
The tragedy began at about 08:00 a.m. when a teacher took a grade 4 learner, Moeketsi Mokhatla, to the school’s sick room, and the learner went unresponsive despite quick medical intervention.
Emergency personnel and the learner’s mother were called; however, the situation deteriorated as the learner’s two siblings, Tshepiso Tsotetsi in grade 3 and Rethabile Mokhatla in grade 5, also displayed signs of illness and were taken to the sick room, only to become unconscious as well.
All three learners were taken to a neighbouring clinic, where they were unfortunately pronounced dead.
An inquest has been launched, and Evaton Police are investigating the fatalities.
Matome Chiloane, Gauteng MEC for Education, Sports, Arts, and Culture, said that before the Tshepiso became unconscious, he mentioned that they had eaten pap, milk, and biscuits for breakfast.
Meanwhile, on the same day, a grade 8 learner at Tsakane Secondary School in Ekurhuleni, Gauteng East, died after allegedly consuming poison at school.
Reports indicate that the incident took place during school hours when two female Grade 8 students allegedly ingested rat poison on school grounds.
One collapsed and had to be carried to the administration block, while the other, though visibly weak, managed to walk there.
Emergency personnel and the learners’ parents were immediately notified. One of the learners was pronounced dead on the school grounds, while the other was taken to a nearby medical institution for emergency care.
Chiloane extended his sympathies to the families of the deceased and stated that the department’s psychosocial team would be dispatched to the school to support the staff and learners during this difficult time.
