EFF deputy Floyd Shivambu ‘step down’
(The Post News)- Floyd Shivambu has confirmed his resignation from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and announced his decision to join former President Jacob Zuma’s MK Party.
At an emergency media briefing held at Winnie Madikizela Mandela House in Marshalltown, Johannesburg, on Thursday, Shivambu read out his resignation letter, flanked by EFF leader Julius Malema and other party leaders.
Shivambu’s departure comes amidst internal strife within the EFF, including the VBS scandal, which has shaken the party since the May general elections.
The party’s failure to grow its support has also been cited as a factor in Shivambu’s decision.
“I will not do or say anything to compromise the organisation we founded,” Shivambu said in his address, emphasizing his commitment to the EFF’s integrity.
However, Shivambu’s resignation is conditional on Malema’s acceptance, sources revealed. Shivambu has also stepped down as a member of Parliament, but will only formalize this process after receiving the go-ahead from the EFF.
The rift between Julius Malema and Floyd Shivambu has been simmering for over two years, fueled by internal power struggles and disagreements within the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).
Some party members have been advocating for Shivambu to take over as president, replacing Malema.
This internal tension is closely tied to the party’s disappointing results in the recent general elections and comes at a critical time, just months before the EFF’s elective conference in December, where leadership positions will be contested.
The MK Party, led by Jacob Zuma, has welcomed Shivambu’s decision, citing his experience and passion for economic freedom as valuable assets to the organization.
Although party leader Malema accepted the resignation of his co-founding member, he emphasised the EFF’s strong foundation. He assured supporters that despite Shivambu’s departure, the party, which has thrived for over ten years, will endure this challenge. Malema framed it as the beginning of a new journey and a turning point for the EFF.
This shocking move marks a significant shift in EFF’s structure as Shivambu joins forces with the MK Party.
