Joint operation with law enforcement agencies aims to curb non-technical losses and ensure reliable electricity supply to legitimate customers.
(The Post News)- Eskom has seized over 35 illegally connected transformers in Diepsloot, Gauteng, during a joint operation with various law enforcement agencies. This crackdown is part of Eskom’s efforts to mitigate non-technical losses, which have resulted in a staggering R5 billion in financial losses during the 2022/23 financial year.
The state-owned electricity company has emphasized the severity of illegal connections, meter bypasses, and other electricity crimes, which not only destabilize the electricity grid but also pose significant safety risks to Eskom technicians. Illegally connected transformers cause frequent supply interruptions, prolonged power outages, and substandard service to rate-paying customers.
Eskom group executive Monde Bala highlighted the importance of protecting Eskom assets, ensuring public safety, and mitigating energy losses caused by illegal activities. The power utility has enlisted the help of Johannesburg Metropolitan Police, Red Ants, Eskom Protective Services, and private security companies to remove illegal connections on Diepsloot Extension Line 6.
The electricity supplier has reiterated its zero-tolerance stance towards crime and corruption within its ranks, investigating allegations that Eskom employees were selling illegal transformers. The findings of these investigations will be communicated to community leaders once complete.
This raid marks a significant step in Eskom’s efforts to curb electricity theft and ensure a reliable electricity supply to legitimate customers. By working together with law enforcement agencies, Eskom aims to protect its assets, prevent energy losses, and promote a culture of accountability and transparency.
