Matwabeng residents are urged to stop depositing ash and live particles into the compact trucks as this may cause serious damage and end up ending the lives of innocent people.
Â
(The Post News)- Matwabeng waste management team in the Setsoto local municipality, Free State, has raised concern about the residents who keep depositing ash into the compactor trucks even after being notified about the danger that might cause.
Â
Last week, following an incident in Meqheleng, the municipality requested the community refrain from mixing domestic refuse with ash as the results are costly and dangerous.Â
Â
“While doing the refuse collection rounds in Matwabeng near Senekal, the waste management team collected refuse containing ash with the live particles,” according to the waste management manager, Shirly Ramabodu, who told The Post News in an interview.Â
Â
Ramabodu adds that the ash deposited into the compactor trucks can damage the hydraulics of the truck, and in a worst-case scenario where the ash still contains live particles, the truck can be set on fire.
Â
“The waste management team became aware of the situation quickly and disposed of the collected waste in an open field to prevent the compactor truck from being set on fire.
Â
She further said “the municipality strongly urges the community to refrain from the behaviour for everyone’s safety and the protection of the municipal fleet.
Â
About the challenges that are faced by her department, she said three compactor trucks have been added this year, and that makes work run smoothly as planned.Â
Â
“We are led by caring municipal leadership that makes no mistake in terms of ensuring that equipment is available and is well serviced,” she says.
Â
She further pointed out that the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) and the Community Work Programme (CWP) employees add necessary value in terms of making sure that the number of staff is adequate.
