Police in Tshwane conducted Operation Shanela in Pretoria-North early on Thursday.
(The Post News)- In a concerted effort to combat crime in Tshwane, Operation Shanela, led by Major-General Samuel Thine, resulted in the arrest of 361 suspects across Pretoria-North and Hercules.
The operation, which unfolded early Thursday, was a collaboration between the South African Police Service (SAPS), the Department of Home Affairs, Gauteng Traffic, Tshwane Metro Police, and various community groups.The operation’s primary focus was on high-crime areas and involved patrols, inspections at liquor outlets, and searches at targeted premises.
The combined efforts of these multidisciplinary teams, including officers from various SAPS stations, led to significant results.Notably, Tshwane’s Detective teams arrested 293 suspects, including 83 for gender-based violence, 4 for murder, 2 for attempted murder, 4 for armed robbery, and 5 for rape.
Additionally, 63 undocumented immigrants were detained, pending deportation, while two employers were fined a total of R27,500 for hiring illegal immigrants.The operation saw the search of 1,528 individuals and 803 vehicles, with 60 vehicles tested for theft.
Three suspects were apprehended for possession and dealing in drugs, with 71 sachets of Cat, Nyaope, and Crystal Meth confiscated. Inspections of five liquor premises led to fines and the seizure of 112,080 ml of liquor due to non-compliance with the liquor act.
Traffic enforcement was also a key component of the operation, with 151 violation notices issued, amounting to R64,280 in fines, and two vehicles discontinued for failing to comply with the Road Traffic Act.
Major-General Thine expressed his gratitude to all the members involved in the operation, acknowledging the teamwork and dedication that led to its success.
