(The Post News)- Floyd Shivambu’s recent Facebook post highlighted the humble work of a National Organiser, but a viral picture sparked jokes and tribalistic comments. MJ Wa Azania, a famous Tsonga social media influencer, defended Shivambu, calling out the comments as tribalism and referencing a 2011 incident where ANCYL leaders were attacked and associated with their traditional leader.
However, not everyone agreed with Azania’s stance. Some social media users criticized Shivambu, with one user saying, “He looks like he can’t even take care of himself, how can he lead?” Another user commented, “Shivambu is just trying to be a hero, but he’s not even from a respectable tribe.”
On the other hand, some users defended Shivambu, with one user saying, “We need more leaders like Shivambu who are willing to get their hands dirty.” Another user commented, “Tribalism has no place in politics, we should focus on the message, not the messenger’s tribe.” A third user agreed, “Shivambu’s commitment to his work is inspiring, regardless of his tribe.”
The debate raises important questions about tribalism in our political discourse. Is it tainting our political landscape? Or can we separate leadership from tribal identity?
As we navigate these complex issues, it’s essential to scrutinize reactions, especially where tribe is involved. We must reject the notion that some tribes are superior and instead focus on the qualities that make a good leader.
