Meteorite sightings reported in Eastern Cape and Western Cape—could this align with NASA’s predictions?
(The Post News)- On Sunday, residents from Jeffrey’s Bay in Gqeberha in Eastern Cape, and residents from George along with several other parts parts of the Western Cape have uploaded videos and pictures of a passing meteorite.
It has been said that the meteorite gave a few flashes of light, crashing into the ocean, which civilians state that it sounded like a loud explosion.
Some civilians have reported to have picked up bits of the meteorite that landed nearby.
Weather Guru, which is a Facebook page being run by Garth Sampson, former employee of the South African Weather Service states it was unclear of what exactly happened given that some residents thought that it was an earthquake.
Through the social media group, it was confirmed that it definitely was not an earthquake.
NASA had announced that between the 27th of August and the 1st of September, five asteroids would pass close to the earth. The asteroids were said they would not as a threat, which would allow astronomers to study the near-earth objects.
Eyewitness in the Oyster Bay vicinity have reported seeing a flash of blue light.
A whaleboat crew member had also claimed that the meteorite had crashed into the sea about 200 metres from where the whaleboat was situated.
Currently, local authorities and exoerts are expected to provide more information as it becomes available.
