The leaked chat in the Nketoana municipality’s management Whatsapp group is to be thoroughly discussed in the upcoming council sitting.
(The Post News)- It doesn’t rain, but it pours as the local municipality of Nketoane in the Free State will, on Thursday, 29 August 2024, have the most anticipated council sitting to discuss the leaked management WhatsApp group chat that caused the differences between the DA and ANC council members.Â
In the leaked Whatsapp group chat intended for the management of Nketoane, the ANC member and Director of Cooperative services, Disebo Motaung, made a deeply concerning statement: “We are exposed to danger; we need guns, that’s all. The best is to kill the Boers.”
Speaking to the Post News about this matter, Anelia Smith, the DA PR councillor said, “We find such a statement, particularly from a senior official entrusted with serving the broader community, to be entirely unacceptable and highly irresponsible. We condemn any form of speech that promotes violence or discrimination.”
Smit adds that as the director of the municipality, Motaung holds a position of significant influence and responsibility. “Her words carry weight, and the expression of such violence sometimes poses a serious threat to social cohesion.
Smith further says that public officials are expected to act as custodians of peace and unity, promoting values that foster harmony within the community.
Furthermore, she says statements like these are not only inflammatory but also have the potential to incite real-world violence. They can contribute to an environment of fear and division, further escalating tension within the community.
Mokete Nhlapo, Municipal Manager told the Post News that the council sitting was scheduled for tomorrow to discuss the matter. Nhlapo says should the matter need to be taken further, the required steps will be applied.
The case was opened at the Reitz Police station, and the matter was also referred to the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), as the DA believes that those who are involved should be held accountable.
