(The Post News)- ActionSA in Tshwane has announced it will join the ANC, EFF, and ACDP in voting out Mayor Cilliers Brink and the DA-led multi-party coalition. The announcement was made on Thursday afternoon when the four parties held an impromptu press conference outside Tshwane House.
George Matjila, the ANC regional secretary in Tshwane, said the parties had met and agreed to vote for Brinks’ removal through a motion of no confidence. He said smaller parties on the council would also vote for him.
The ANC had tabled a motion of no confidence against Brinks, and the vote is due on Friday.
However, the DA has filed an urgent appeal in the High Court seeking a declaration that the motion is unlawful. The suit also covers an earlier motion referred to the city council on Thursday but then withdrawn.
The ANC announced that it would withdraw its latest motion, causing the legal challenge to moot.
“We have decided in principle to temporarily withdraw the motion that was filed to address the side issues that are impeding. However, we will certainly return within 14 days,” Matjila said.
DA-Tshwane caucus spokesperson Kwena Moloto responded to ActionSA’s announcement, calling it an absolute betrayal.
“We are to receive any formal communication from ActionSA that they are withdrawing from the coalition,” Moloto said.
Brink said the news was extremely disappointing and that he saw it as a betrayal of the coalition and the people of the capital city.
Earlier this week, the multi-party coalition held a press conference, but ActionSA was conspicuously absent.
Brink said ActionSA’s contribution had been significant, and the party had been a core member of the coalition government. He said he had contacted ActionSA national chair Michael Beaumont. However, no meeting between Brink and Beaumont has yet taken place.
