(The Post News)- The New Development Bank (NDB) has approved a substantial loan of R17.8 billion to finance water and sanitation infrastructure development projects in South Africa. This significant investment is set to transform the country’s municipal infrastructure, addressing pressing needs and ensuring the provision of basic services to disadvantaged households.
The loan, falling under the Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG), will play a vital role in bridging the infrastructure gap in South Africa’s water and sanitation sector. The National Treasury has welcomed the funding, acknowledging its importance in supporting freight logistics and water projects.
Enoch Godongwana, Minister of Finance, expressed his gratitude for the NDB’s funding commitments, emphasizing their significance in addressing project funding challenges. He highlighted the importance of the bank’s financial instruments in de-risking infrastructure projects and attracting private capital.
The NDB’s loan agreement with Transnet, worth R5 billion, was also announced, aiming to modernize and improve South Africa’s freight rail sector. This investment is expected to enhance operational capabilities, contributing to economic growth and competitiveness.
Dilma Rousseff, President of the NDB, emphasized the bank’s commitment to supporting sustainable development and economic growth in South Africa.
