Thembi Simelane will appear before Parliament’s Justice Committee on Friday to explain her involvement in a controversial loan from the collapsed VBS Mutual Bank.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has also demanded answers from Simelane, seeking an urgent briefing on the matter. According to reports, Simelane received a R500,000 loan from an intermediary who solicited loans from VBS, despite a warning from National Treasury that dealing with the bank was illegal.At the time, Simelane was the Mayor of Polokwane Municipality.
Her alleged involvement in the VBS scandal has raised questions about her integrity and judgment. The Portfolio Committee of Justice and Constitutional Development wants Simelane to provide insight into her dealings with VBS and clarify her role in the loan scandal.
Allegations surfaced that Thembi Simelane, then mayor of Polokwane, used a R575,600 loan from VBS Mutual Bank to buy a coffee shop in Sandton, Johannesburg, sparking widespread media coverage. In response, committee chairperson Nqola expressed grave concern over the reports, prompting an investigation into the minister’s alleged involvement.
“The allegations are detrimental to South Africa’s efforts to project a corruption-free image, undermining the nation’s progress in combating graft and promoting transparency.” Nqola stated.
This development comes as the VBS scandal continues to unfold, with several high-profile individuals and politicians implicated in the bank’s collapse.
