African Youth Survey reveals 60% of young Africans consider emigrating due to corruption and government inaction.
(The Post News)- A recent survey reveals 60% of young Africans consider emigrating due to corruption and government inaction. The 2024 African Youth Survey, conducted across 16 countries, exposes widespread disillusionment with governance and economic prospects.
Corruption is the primary obstacle to progress, with 83% of respondents concerned. Young Africans demand tougher sanctions against corrupt politicians and a different form of government.
Despite a modest rise in Afro-optimism to 37%, 55% believe Africa is headed in the wrong direction. Concerns about foreign influence are high, with 72% worried about exploitation by foreign companies.
However, 82% view China’s influence positively, and 79% see the US influence as beneficial. Perceptions of Russian influence have increased, particularly in Malawi and South Africa. North America and Western Europe are the preferred destinations for emigration, with 58% of young people considering emigrating in the next three years.
The survey highlights the urgency for governments to address corruption and foreign influence concerns to stem emigration and tap into Africa’s youth potential. With 420 million youth aged 15-35, one-third unemployed, Africa’s future depends on it. The population is expected to grow to over 830 million by 2050.
The Ichikowitz Family Foundation commissioned the survey, polling 5,604 people aged 18-24 in Botswana, Cameroon, Chad, Congo Brazzaville, Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, and Zambia. South African youth are particularly pessimistic, with only 16% optimistic about the future.
