A mass shooting occurred at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, on Wednesday, leaving four people dead and nine others injured. The victims include Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, both 14-year-old students, and Richard Aspinwall and Christina Irimie, both math teachers at the school. Aspinwall also helped coach the school’s football team.
The suspected gunman, 14-year-old Colt Gray, a student at the school, is in custody and will be charged with murder as an adult due to the severity of the crime. Gray had been questioned by law enforcement last year regarding online threats to commit a school shooting, but no probable cause for arrest was found at the time.
The investigation is ongoing, with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation working to gather all the facts and ensure accuracy. The school had received a phone threat earlier in the morning warning of shootings at five schools, but no evidence of other schools being targeted has been found. Local schools will remain shut down for the next week as investigators continue their work.
This year has seen a surge in school shootings, with this incident being one of the most tragic. In addition to the four fatalities, nine others were hurt – eight students and one teacher – and are recovering in the hospital. Thankfully, all are expected to make a full recovery.
The school’s security measures, including automatic door locks, may have prevented even more harm. Gray was stopped from entering his classroom by a quick-thinking classmate who saw the gun. First responders arrived quickly, and Gray was taken into custody minutes after the shooting began.
