(The Post News)- The communities in the Eastern Free State, particularly those staying in Qwaqwa are urged to be vigilant during this season when the rains are expected the most. They are encouraged to be careful of the rivers as they will be expected to be full of water.
The warning follows an incident where an old woman from Qwaqwa was rescued after being seen floating on top of the water.
According to the Free State police spokesperson, Captain Loraine Earle, on Monday, 09 September 2024, after being alerted by the community, the swift police response saved the life of a 63-year-old woman who was found floating in the river.
Captain Earle states the Phuthaditjhaba police were summoned to Namahadi after an old woman was seen floating in the river near an old single bridge.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, 10 September 2024, Captain Earle mentioned an old woman was seen floating face up and was rescued from the chilling water by Seargent Teboho Selebano and constable Palesa Monoena. Seargent Moleko Mabe, South African Police Services (SAPS) learner diver of Phuthaditjhaba client service centre also came to assist the members.
The emergency medical personnel were called to the scene and the old lady was transported to the Elizabeth Ross hospital in a stable condition.
Earle concludes, “An old woman was walking at night and ended up in the water hours before she was rescued by the police.
